Evaluation departments

The AERES has three evaluation departments: for institutions, research units and programmes and degrees.

Department for the evaluation of institutions

Headed up by Philippe TCHAMITCHIAN , this department evaluates higher education and research institutions (universities, schools, grands établissements, etc.), research organisations (public science and technology institutions and public industrial and commercial institutions), scientific cooperation foundations and institutions as well as the French National Research Agency.

Between 60 and 80 institutions are evaluated every year. On the basis of the institution’s self-evaluation report, the department analyses the actions the evaluated institution takes in carrying out its missions. It seeks to identify its strengths and weaknesses and then makes recommendations. It is also competent in validating the staff evaluation procedures of the institutions concerned.

Integrating the prior evaluation of research units and programmes, the evaluation of an institution focuses on its organisation and governance, as well as its strategy in terms of research, exploitation of research findings, training, student life and external relations… To this end, the department for the evaluation of institutions provides the expert committees and evaluated institutions with an evaluation guide.

For research organisations, the evaluation covers all of their missions, particularly as regards exploitation of findings and transfers.

The department also analyses the site policies of institutions. It can, in addition, conduct cross-disciplinary research on themes falling within its field of competence. Every year it draws up a summary of the evaluations conducted.

This department, headed up by Pierre Glaudes, evaluates the research units of higher education institutions and research organisations. More than 700 evaluations are carried out every year. These cover all types of research unit, in both higher education institutions and research organisations, supervised by the French Ministry of Higher Education and Research and other French ministries (agriculture, industry, etc.).

The purpose of evaluating research units is to help them to characterise their research potential and to pinpoint their position in their regional, national and international environments as part of their missions and in accordance with the strategic objectives of the institutions or research organisations to which they are attached.

Department for the evaluation of programmes and degrees

Tasked with evaluating programmes and degrees (bachelors, masters, doctoral schools) under the management of Jean-Marc GEIB , this department works in the context of developing a European Higher Education and Research Area.

The evaluation scope covers all bachelor, master and doctorate programmes of public or private higher education institutions, mainly supervised by the French Ministry of Higher Education and Research, as well as other French ministries (of Culture and Communication, Agriculture, Industry, Defence, etc.).

The evaluation objectives are set according to three levels: bachelors, masters and doctorates. The evaluations conducted by this department take the scientific and professional relevance of the range of programmes into consideration, in terms of knowledge acquisition and skills development. integration of doctors into the job market and/or continuation of studies is assessed in terms of resources implemented and results.
