Organising evaluation reports
A report, to which the evaluated institution’s comments are attached, is published on the Agency’s website for each evaluation conducted by the AERES.
Types of evaluation report
The AERES produces different types of reports:
- institution or research organisation report
- research unit reports
- bachelor’s degree report
- master’s degree report
- doctoral school report
The evaluated institution’s comments are attached to each report that is published.
Reports’ characteristics
Institutions and research organisations: painting an overall picture of an institution’s strategy and activity
Each institution report is organised around the following themes: research, exploitation of research findings, training, student life, external relations, international relations, governance, relations with university hospitals and communication policy.
At the end of the report, the AERES presents the strengths and weaknesses of the institution and makes recommendations.

Research units: study the scientific strategy and contribution of teams
The evaluation primarily focuses on:
- the overall and in-depth analysis of the unit (presentation, development and local, regional and European standing)
- the specific analysis of teams and projects
- the life of the unit (management, human resources, etc)
The AERES issues an overall opinion on the unit and specifies the unit’s strengths and opportunities, threats and points for improvement. It also makes recommendations. Its conclusions include a multi-criteria score based on:
- scientific quality and production
- influence and appeal and integration in the environment
- strategy, governance and laboratory life
- project assessment
These scores are also rounded off by an overall score.
Programmes: analyse the scientific and professional relevance
The range of programmes concerns bachelor’s degrees, master’s degrees and doctoral schools.
- The evaluation of bachelor’s degrees focuses mainly on four items:
- how the range of programmes is managed
- the educational plan
- aids to success
- integration into the job market and continuation of the studies chosen
- The evaluation of master’s degrees takes account of:
- scientific and professional objectives
- the association with research
- the educational organisation of the speciality
- what becomes of graduates after their studies
- The evaluation of doctoral schools is conducted according to four main criteria:
- quality of scientific backup
- how the doctoral school is run
- supervision and follow-up of doctoral students
- follow-up and integration of doctors into the job market
These four criteria are marked A+ to C and lead to an overall score (A+, A, B or C) for the doctoral school.
