"Quality Assurance: foundation for the future"; this was the theme of the INQAAHE (The International Network for Quality Assurance Agencies in Higher Education) conference held from 4 to 7 April 2011.

The INQAAHE 2011 Conference was held in Madrid from 4 to 7 April 2011. This was also the occasion to celebrate the association's 20th anniversary. The INQAAHE was created to bring together and develop the international principles and practices in higher education quality assurance. Evaluation agencies and universities involved in the quality processes of these institutions make up the majority of its 200 members.

Every 2 years, the network meets for a conference to exchange knowledge on good practices and experiences in regards to quality initiatives and evaluation processes in higher education.

The 2011 conference was opened by the Prince of Asturias and provided a forum for the following themes:

  • Globalizing forces and regional/national goals in higher education: emerging issues
  • Professionalization of quality assurance
  • Effective processes for diversity, development and quality continuity
  • Independence of quality in relation to stakeholders
  • Issues surrounding ranking

Over 350 participants from 70 countries attended the conference, including three AERES representatives. This diversity did not prevent the addressing of issues shared by evaluation agencies such as the choice and independence of experts, the relevance of evaluation indicators and the development of quality management culture within evaluated institutions.
